The night was silent and Vincent stared at the flames. After thirty years, even the simple sensations of cold and warm were novelties. He tried to keep himself away from the touches - his skin was oversensitive, and a pat against his shoulder felt like a caress alongside his back. The people had spoken too loudly and too much and Vincent had longed for the silence - and as the night had fallen he had got it. He listened to their breaths and it was... relaxing, if he gave the thought some time.

His ears picked up the footsteps behind him easily. The approaching man didn't try to move stealthily, his heavy boots crunching on twigs and pebbles. The man in crimson could identify him just by the sounds - nobody else was carrying such a huge sword. The leather keeping the weapon on its owner's back creaked softly, metal parts clinking together like tiny chimes.

Honey hair and tanned skin moved into Vincent's range of vision. Mako-bright blue eyes stared into the campfire and a sigh escaped those pale pink lips. "Mind if I sit?"

Vincent shook his head lightly, gesturing with his good hand to the ground. "It's your fire, too." He didn't mind the young ex-Soldier's presence as the other tended to keep quiet as well, and, Vincent admitted it to himself, he was also pleasing to the eyes. Not that he stared but it was hard to not notice. His red eyes flickered back to the fire, watching as the flames danced.

Cloud settled down, after discarding the Buster. He crossed his legs and his eyes were half-lidded as he stared into the fire. Most times, it was impossible to tell, what was going on in his head - some of them assumed, Cloud had no idea either. The young man flexed his hands slowly, then pried off his gloves, dropping them into his lap. He held his palms close to the fire, maybe for the warmth, maybe to touch them, and he just caught himself in time.

"How was it like," he spoke up almost on a whisper, "to sleep that long, without the need to pay attention to the rest of the world?"

"Quiet," Vincent said then looked at Cloud, studying his profile. There was nothing to do but sleep, dreaming sometimes and fighting back the nightmares. Nothing to touch, nothing to smell save the old wood and used air, nothing to feel. "But void of anything. It was an escape from... everything," he added quietly, thinking about Lucrecia, Hojo, and the child whom he hadn't got a chance to know.

"Quiet..." Cloud pondered. "Perhaps... That's what I need as well. To rest... to be void of everything." His eyes narrowed further, and his form tensed. "Void of memories... responsibilities..." He pressed his hands to his temples and his eyes closed, his back hunched. His small but strong form was trembling, and suddenly, his body jerked. Vincent could see the gritted teeth and hear the ragged breathing - the blond youth was obviously in pain.

"It didn't help anything," Vincent replied with a light frown. He knelt up and reached out to touch Cloud's shoulder, offering the sympathy he was capable of. His palm itched through the glove but he didn't pull away. "You still wake up in the end and the problems don't go away."

Cloud’s muscles spasmed once or twice, then the young man gasped and leaned against the other, panting heavily. "S-shit... Vincent, don't... don't tell the others." Beads of sweat glistened on his forehead as one hand fisted into the crimson coat, unable to remember how the dark man avoided the touch of others. "It's getting worse," Cloud swallowed and he curled up, practically in the other's lap. "I don't know why... I want it to stop, just make it stop!"

Vincent swallowed. It took some effort on his part to remain motionless, to not move closer to the boy, neither push him off but he managed. "Don't fear, I won't," he said, keeping his voice low, not to wake up the others. "Hush..." He put his hand on Cloud's head and caressed the soft, blond hair, torturing himself further with the sweet sensations. He could feel his body awakening, letting him know that it wasn't dead, or at least it lived again, still, he didn't stop the motions, trying to ease the other's discomfort.

Cloud slowly calmed down, the shivers subsided. A bit reluctantly, he straightened and smoothed his hair back from his forehead, though the honey tresses fell back immediately. "Thanks. Y'know, you're not that creepy from this close." He looked away, then glanced back at the other. "I like your eyes."

Vincent was not baffled by many things usually; still Cloud's compliment managed it. He blinked then pointed one finger at his own face. "You like these...?" he asked, his disbelief clear. Who would like a pair of red, unsettling eyes...?

Cloud couldn't hold back a chuckle at that. He looked at Vincent, azure eyes filled with merry sparkles. "Tifa has reddish eyes as well. And some soldiers had really weird eyes because of the mako. I've always thought that's cool. They're like wine. And you heard Yuffie, she's convinced you're a vampire." He paused a little then he tilted his head to the side, with a soft frown. He looked adorable like that. "You're not a vampire, right?"

Vincent suppressed a sigh. Really, the kids these days...! Sleep thirty years and they would assume everything about you. "I didn't burn at the sunlight, did I?" he asked back pointedly then looked at the fire. "And thanks. I've never thought about them as 'cool'."

"I think they are," Cloud nodded firmly. "And besides..." he rubbed his head where the other man had touched him, "you seem kind of nice, gentle." There was a pause. "Can I ask something? You don't need to answer if you don't want to."

Vincent nodded, curiously. He didn't point out how the ex-Soldier was most probably crazy or naive if he thought Vincent was gentle just because he took a few moments to comfort the other man.

"Uhm..." A slight tint of pink colored the young ex-SOLDIER's cheeks. "Do you... you know... still..." he sighed. "Do you still feel desire and such?"

Vincent looked at the flames. He didn't want to answer such a personal question but he had the feeling that Cloud would misunderstand his silence as a 'no'. That would have lead to more uncomfortable questions, especially if the ex-Soldier spoke about it to anyone else. "Yes," he said, breaking the silence after almost half a minute. "Why?"

"Just... dunno." Cloud made an unsure gesture with his hand. "After all, you've been through a lot... Maybe I just wanted to know how should I feel about you and if I say something, would that upset you. I'm... kinda glad you're okay." He looked into the fire and smiled a bit. "Sometimes... I miss it, you know? I remember having fun with the others in SOLDIER, just because. We were young and horny, but which guy isn't...?"

"Indeed," Vincent said softly and reached out to catch Cloud's wrist. His fingers tingled from the sensations but he held it fast. He glanced at the younger man and allowed himself a small smirk. "Would you happen to have this... problem even now?"

Cloud's azure eyes widened a little as he glanced at the fingers holding his arm, then back into the other's face. Those crimson eyes shone with unmistakable flames. Well, the blond youth was kind of curious, what's beneath that tattered cape anyway.

"I guess. I'm still young and chasing an insane ex-general across half the world doesn't leave much time for more... pleasurable intercourses."

The invitation was as open as it could have been. "I hope you'll forgive me if I'm a bit rusty," Vincent said and leant forward, pressing his lips against Cloud's.

The mako-bright gaze fluttered shut as the ex-SOLDIER responded to the caress of those pale lips. He sneaked one arm around the other's waist and pulled him closer. His blood began to sing with excitement as he noted, that the inside of Vincent's mouth was quite warm, and his tongue was far from dead. Cloud let out a tiny moan and broke the contact, gazing into those wine-colored pools. "So... You're definitely not dead. No vampire either, no biting and all-" he trailed off.

"I didn't say no biting," Vincent replied and pulled Cloud closer, dipping his head to taste those sweet lips.

The morning was bright and fresh, filled with promises and new hope. The members of the party all woke and packed their things together. Cloud was standing not too far away, on top of a small hill, gazing thoughtfully into the distance.

Yuffie walked next to him with a light frown on her youthful face. She looked at Cloud intently, glanced at Vincent, then back at the blond ex-Soldier. "Come'ere, Cloud," she said, her voice teasing.

"I'm right here, Yuffie," the blond youth looked at her. "What's the matter? Is everybody ready?"

"Mostly," she nodded as she went closer. She wasn't really taller than Cloud but she jumped up, as she reached out and pushed the turtleneck down, looking at Cloud's exposed skin with a wide grin.

Cloud's eyes widened and he flailed a little to get his balance back before attempting to peel the girl off of him, a faint pink shadow gracing his face.

"Not a vampire, huh?" Yuffie asked as she dropped back down. She was looking pointedly at the uncovered neck and her grin just intensified from Cloud's blush.

Cloud opened his mouth then snapped it shut. He was pouting like a six years old. "I'll tell Barret you stole our materia again!"
