I usually take ~200 words for a layout, or a pencil sketch. Also, some specifications are nice, as in where to place the navlinks, sidebar or not, imagemap or not, color scheme... Though, color tweaking is easy, so I might just leave that on basic, and you can tweak it as you want to.
